Top 10 Weird and Unusual Shaped Boats

Looking back I have been to rather a lot of boat shows and events for someone who doesn’t know how to swim and doesn’t own a boat. But if I did know how to swim and I did own a boat I would probably be typing this while sat on one of these crazy boats…

Sadly this image doesn’t do this boat justice, but it really was a refuse skip that was turned into a boat!  The perfect shape I suppose, just so long as it is not full of rubbish.

The problem with picnic tables is they are often placed far away from the lakes and waters edge, this picnic table doesn’t have any such problems.

This amazing pleasure tour boat is located in Fujiyoshida river and gives cruises by the hour! This just instantly went onto my bucket list.

You are not going quackers, this really is a boat shaped like a duck! If that wasn’t weird enough it has heart shaped windows for some reason. I wonder how much this cost because it must have been a big bill! (badum tish!)

In theory you wouldn’t have to do much to a clog to make is seaworthy given that they are made from wood anyway. Just made one big enough to sit in!

It would have made for a much better story if the owl and the pussycat went to sea in a beautiful hot dog speed boat! I can only hope it is powered by ketchup.

I wonder if this boat smells like a boating shoe?!? No matter how it smells it will still be a pain to do up those laces to secure it to the dock. Double knots will be essential!

The paternoster is kind of elevator that consist of a chain of open compartments that move up and down continuously through the vertical shaft of a building in a loop and without stopping. Passengers step into the moving compartments in the direction they wish to go and then hop off when the elevator reaches the desired floor. There is no stopping in between the floors, and passengers must remain alert and get their timing right or else get severed. For people who avoid escalators for fear of getting their toes crushed, paternoster are a death trap. A small misstep and you could lose your arm or even your life.

The first paternoster was installed in 1884 in Dartford, England. Seven years prior, its patent was obtained by a British engineer named Peter Hart. The name paternoster comes from the Latin words “Our Father”, which are the first two words of ‘The Lord’s Prayer’. It doesn’t mean you should say a small prayer each time you get into one, the reference comes from the device’s resemblance to rosary beads that are used when reciting prayers.

Paternosters became very popular in Europe throughout the first half of the 20th century because they could carry more passengers than ordinary elevators. Although they move slower than elevators, because no queuing is required, they are generally able to move people faster from floor to floor.

Paternosters are largely extinct today. Because of risk of injury many countries have banned them altogether. There are a couple of working examples in the UK, Denmark, Finland, Poland, Hungary, Sweden, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Germany, with Germany having the largest number of operating paternosters —some 230.

The German government has made at least two attempts in the past to shut down these deadly contraptions, but there is a strong resistance movement dedicated to keeping these nostalgic machines alive.

“You can never really prevent danger,” retorted a paternoster fanatic, when the government tried to impose a new ban in 2015. “Because then you’d have to ban cars, because there’s of course the danger of an accident. … These elevators are a part of industrial history.“

Once upon a time, paternosters were everywhere. Now they are mainly found in administrative buildings such as government ministries, town halls and police headquarters. Installation of new paternosters are still banned since 1974.

The longest bicycle in the world

Setting themselves a challenge to get into the Guinness World Records annual, members of Dutch cycling organisation the Mijl Van Mares Werkploeg built the Longest bicycle in the world, measuring an astonishing 35.79 m (117 ft 5 in) long.

With several aluminium trusses used to link both ends (the kind used for lighting rigs at concerts) to ensure the lengthy frame doesn’t sag, the bicycle has to be operated by two people: one steers at the front while another pedals from the back.

However, in all other ways it is a true bicycle that actually works, with only two wheels and no stabilisers.

The group’s leader, Frank Pelt told GWR that the bike is quite easy to ride, “just don’t turn any corners!”

The Mijl Van Mares Werkploeg successfully achieved their challenge and secured a place in Guinness World Records 2016, but their record was stretched when Santos and University of South Australia (both Australia) created a 41.42 m (135 ft 10.7 in) long bicycle, as measured and ridden in Adelaide, Australia, earlier this year.
