When Ivan the Terrible, the Grand Prince of Moscow and the first Tsar of Russia, ascended the throne in the middle of the 16th century, he decided to put an end to the Khanate of Kazan, a medieval Bulgarian-Tatar Turkic state occupying the territory of former Volga Bulgaria, and ruled by the descendants of Genghis Khan. <br>

The Khanates and the Muscovites had been at conflict for the last hundred years. The bone of contention between the two was Kazan’s strategic location on the Volga River near its confluence with the Kama, the major river in the western Ural Mountains. As long as Kazan existed as a threat, Russian movement into and beyond the Urals, as well as south toward the Caspian Sea, was blocked.<br>

Between 1545 and 1550, Ivan led several campaigns against Kazan, the capital of the Khanate, but failed to seize the city. While returning from one such unsuccessful seize of Kazan, in 1550, the Tsar’s troops camped on the banks of the Volga near the confluence with the Sviyaga River, about 30km away from Kazan. This was when Ivan noticed a small wooded promontory, rising above the waters on the banks of the Volga. Ivan realized that in order to conduct a successful seize of Kazan he needed a base closer to the city from which he could launch his attacks. The promontory provided Ivan the perfect place for his base. It was both accessible and defensible, and its location in the Volga allowed him to keep under control the waterways and roads leading to Kazan, and eventually Kazan itself.<br>

Ivan ordered the construction of a massive fortress, but not at the chosen site. Building a fortress on the promontory under the nose of the enemy would have been foolhardy. Instead, construction took place at Uglich, about 700 km upstream, where Ivan’s engineers could carefully design, build and test without the lingering threat of enemy attack. After a trial assembly, the builders marked each log, disassembled the fortress and sent it floating down the river. <br>

At the mouth of Sviyaga River, the rafts of logs were captured and reassembled like Lego bricks into a large fort whose territory exceeded that of the Moscow Kremlin. The fort was a full fledged town with walls, towers, gates, civilian buildings and even churches, and it was completed in just four weeks, thanks to its pre-fabricated design. It must have been a magnificent fort because pretty soon large segments of the local population started coming to the new town and requested Ivan to give them citizenship. In return, the locals swore their allegiance to the Tsar.<br>

Ivan named the new island town Sviyazhsk, and it serve as a strong point for the capture of the city by the Muscovite army. After the defeat of Kazan, Sviyazhsk continued to grow as an outpost of Christianity and the center of Russian culture and orthodoxy among neighboring peoples.<br>

The dark days of Sviyazhsk’s history started in the first half of the 20th century after the October Revolution. The Bolsheviks destroyed about half of Sviyazhsk's churches. The remaining buildings and monasteries became cells for prisoners of a forced labor camp and later a Gulag prison. The culmination of Sviyazhsk’s story came in 1957 after the construction of the Kuibyshev Water Reservoir when the entire area around Sviyazhsk was flooded. More than three-fourth of the town was wiped out, leaving only the historic downtown above water. Sviyazhsk became a small island, connected to the mainland by a serpentine road. It’s population decreased from 2,000 to just 250.<br>
<br>
Fortunately, in 1960 Sviyazhsk was declared as a monument of Russian history and culture, and was added in the tentative list of UNESCO’s world heritage sites. The historic city is currently being revived with restoration of old churches and construction of new houses. Tour operators are also promoting Sviyazhsk as a tourist destination. Life is slowly getting back to normal.<br>

However, at the Leeds Castle Dog Collar Museum, you are treated to some of the fanciest and most decadent canine neckwear in history.<br>

This unique collection consists of nearly 100 collars that were collected by Irish medieval scholar John Hunt and his wife, Gertrude. Extended by the Leeds Castle Foundation, the collection has pieces that span history from medieval to Victorian times.<br>

In the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries, the forests of Europe were full of predators that were happy to rip out the throats of the hunting dogs that entered their territory. To protect their faithful companions, hunters would fit the dogs with thick iron collars covered in impressive spikes.<br>

The story goes that the local potter was bidding farewell to a dear friend of his when he asked for something to remember her by. She cut off a piece of her hair to leave as a reminder. He put it up in his shop, and told the story to the visitors and tourists who passed through. Not to be outdone, other women who enjoyed the story left a piece of their hair as well.<br>

There's a secondary reason to leave some hair as well – once or twice a year, winning locks of hair are chosen and the previous owners of the tresses get a message inviting them back for a stay in the connected guest house, and workshops with the master potter.<br>

While the pottery and guest house remain active, the museum fills up a section of the shop where the earthen wares are stored. Visitors wander down the cave-like room with hair attached to every available surface. Pencils, paper, pins and scissors are offered to those wanting to add their own piece to the collection.<br>

Started by a retired master plumber, Barney Smith's Toilet Seat Art Museum is an ever-growing collection of artfully decorated bathroom castoffs that show off the more whimsical side of a notoriously dirty fixture.<br>

Covering every inch of the museum's walls and even hanging from the rafters are toilet seats and lids decorated with all manner of mixed media (save fecal matter, thankfully). Smith was inspired by his father (also a master plumber) who had a penchant for mounting plaques and trophies. Smith noticed a similarity between the mounting boards and the toilet seats he worked with every day, and soon began collecting used seats that he would then paint or adorn with bright trinkets. <br>

Working in his garage, the space filled up over the years with his creations and once the local media caught on to his idiosyncratic arts, the attention was great enough that Smith decided to open it as a "museum" to anyone who wanted to take a look at his toilet seats. <br>

The gracious and welcoming Smith is happy to show off his garage collection to anyone interested enough to drop by. He even encourages visitors to bring in their own toilet seats since he prolific enough to always be running out. If someone does bring in a seat that he ends up using, Smith will engrave the donator's name on the seat so that future generations will know where it came from. <br>

Smith is getting on in the years, but unlike many outsider artists, he has taken measures to preserve his artistic collection. Not only has his daughter agreed to look after the works when he passes, but the Bemis Company, one of the leading manufacturers of toilet seats has said that they would like to move the entire collection into their headquarters.<br>

The steel-framed sphere was covered with transparent acrylic panels. To control the indoor ambient temperature, Fuller designed an apparatus composed of mobile triangular panels that would move over the inner surface of the dome following the sun. Unfortunately the system never worked properly. Instead valves were installed in the center of the acrylic panels for the pavilion to ventilate. However, to cut cost, the metal tubes were welded and not bolted as proposed by Fuller. This made the structure impossible to dismantle. So after the fair ended, the US government donated its pavilion to the City of Montréal. For several years, the Biosphere was used for recreational activities and as a public attraction.
